The pupils of two 5th level classes and four teachers of the Don Bosco Primary School (Scuola Primaria Don Bosco) in Pordenone had an unusual school day being hosed by Pietro Rosa TBM for a day of fun learning in a real work environment.
Mauro Fioretti, President and CEO of the company, gave the students a warm welcome and presented the history of the 132-year-old company from its origins through to the products made today for its global customer base. This part of the day’s program served to bring alive many of the topics they had learned during their academic year.
The students visited the companies manufacturing facilities in small groups, taking great interest in the massive forges hammering and transforming the shape of metal to get it ready for the next phase of its manufacturing cycle, machining. Many of the students were so engaged with the tour that it is easy to envisage many of them becoming the industrialists of the future!
Four Pietro Rosa TBM engineers supported the day that led to a “Build your own Trent Engine”, the Trent engine is, of course, the famous wide core Rolls-Royce jet engine, derivatives of which are used on many of the giant aircraft we see in the sky today. The paper engine kits were kindly supplied by Rolls-Royce plc.
Before the teamwork engine build event a Pietro Rosa TBM engineer explained the basic “Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow” working principles of a jet engine with the aid of a nice big poster of jet engine.
Every student received a kit to try to build one at home, a paper one of course, not a real one as they cost several millions euros each! The jet engine kits, along with a T-shirt adorned with the fantastic F35 fighter aircraft was given to each student as a memento of the action packed day.
Hopefully, it was a day the children will remember fondly and look back on in a few years as they start to think about a career. This “eye opener” into engineering and manufacturing may well be the seed that inspires some of these young people to consider this as a career option.
The teachers and students seemed to love the day as much as the staff at Pietro Rosa TBM enjoyed having them there.
